Mitch and His Children

I was brought up in a bar in Frankfort, NY, a small predominantly Italian town along the Mohawk River. A swinging door separated the bar from our small apartment. I rode my tricycle throughout the bar and back room, did my homework at a corner booth and we ate most of our meals at the bar, My father tended bar, my mother waited tables and I begin doing odd jobs when I started school graduating to bar tending at age 13. To a large extent I credit the early responsibilities my parents gave me and the faith they showed in me for my belief in myself, that I could give up tenure teaching at a university to become an artist. My father had a college education, rare during the depression, so jobs were unavailable.
